Microsoft announced a new Surface Laptop today. It’s basically described as the MacBook Air that Apple doesn’t make anymore and honestly, this description is dead on. Take a look at their marketing video.

Now, I’m not one to jump on the “Apple is doomed” bandwagon that so many pundits like to chant, but I will freely admit that Apple, and their Mac hardware, is starting to feel stale. I’ve heard many Apple folks say that users don’t want to really touch their screens, but I’ve noticed folks browsing in any given Apple store immediately touch the screen of a MacBook, expecting some sort of response. We are rapidly moving to a touchy-feely world when it comes to our technology, and I don’t think touchbars are the answer. Having everything respond to touch is where the answer lies.
I started browsing around the other Microsoft videos on YouTube and came across the one about the new Surface Book with Performance Base. This does everything I would expect a computer in 2017 to do. My only hesitation is Windows 10 and part of that hesitation stems from ignorance, I don’t know a lot about Windows 10 other than the stuff thrown all over the web, and how reliable is information on the Internet these days?
Color me intrigued.
Damn…that looks like an Apple VIDEO!
I’m intrigued as well, except for the “fabric” covering the keyboard/wrist rest area.
I use Win10 at work. I don’t hate it, but I still prefer the MacOS. Not ready to jump ship yet…
I have a Surface Pro 4 and it is BY FAR the best Windows computer I’ve ever owned. Having said that: Windows 10 is starting to get on my nerves and I can say I never use the touch screen.
My fear is that if Apple went down the road of touch-screen more and more things will become iOS instead of macOS – see also: Chromebook.
When I want a touch screen my iPad is perfect. When I actually want to get some work done it’s either the MacBook Pro or the Surface Pro 4 (depending on the app I need to use).
I am intrigued by Windows 10 but I have a lot invested in macOS and my workflow is definitely Apple-centric. I’m not completely onboard with carrying my iPad Pro as a laptop replacement when I travel, I still feel like I’m technologically hobbled when using iOS as a primary operating system. There’s a lot I can do with my iPad Pro but there’s a lot I can’t. I think this is where a macOS version of the iPad Pro or Surface would excel.
Why is Windows 10 starting to get on your nerves?
It’s little things: like losing ability to control Windows Updates, when and how they’re applied. The inability to setup a VPN connection using Windows OS features AND the pain in the butt process to get Cisco VPN working on it. VPN just *works* on macOS.
