With the Independence Day long weekend coming up, we are halfway through the work week. With monsoon activity on the horizon, the latter half of the week will be quite interesting.
I have been a fan of Jeff Geerling’s YouTube channel for quite a while. His work appeals to my geek side, heck, he even featured a master clock system that was a close cousin to the clock systems I’ve messed with over the years.
In this video he shares his frustration with the new trend of not really owning something you buy, because of clouds and corporations and capitalism. It’s worth a viewing.
And don’t buy a dishwasher that requires a wifi connection.
I’ve been trying to avoid politics as much as possible, but this whole “Big Beautiful Bill” bullshit has overwhelmed all manner of online discourse. With the help of Alaskan Senator Lisa Murkowski, who remarked that the Senate bill should not be passed by the House even though she voted for it, this idiotic bill is off for a final vote from the U.S. House of Representatives before an artificially imposed deadline of the 4th of July.
Senator Lisa Murkowski released an epic word salad trying to rationalize why she voted “yes” on a bill that she doesn’t believe in, the gist being that she was doing what was in the best interest of Alaskans (even though 30% of Alaskans are on Medicaid, one of the programs that will be reduced to pay for tax cuts to the rich) and that she said the House will fix the bill. She’s tired.
Oh, she’s so very tired.
You know who else is tired? Me. I am so tired of political asshattery and stupid people doing stupid things. In the meanwhile, I’m doing my best to stay away from social media for the rest of the week.
It’s either that or drinking at lunch time.
I hope this idiotic vote from Murkowski haunts her for the rest of her life. This should be her legacy. This should be the one thing she is known for. Nothing else matters, she sold her soul today and this should be what everyone knows about her.
I’m getting back into my old ways when it comes to listening to music. Instead of letting an algorithm decide what I should be listening to, I am revisiting my (digitized) CD and album collection. Today’s album selection at the moment is “Time and Tide” by Basia from 1987.
I remember driving in my 1982 Dodge Omni back in the day, this album playing off the cassette over the tinny built in speakers in the dash. I found this album glorious back then and it’s extra glorious today through my Bose in-ear headphones.
Listening to entire albums has been really enjoyable over the past couple of days. I feel like I’m seeing the entire piece of art, instead of a snippet thrown in a magazine or something.
If you’ve never heard of Basia or listened to her music, I highly recommend this album. The instrumentation in “Run For Cover” is a lot of fun, Basia’s vocals in the ballad “Time and Tide” are particularly inspiring, and the radio single, “New Day For You” (which surprisingly only reached #53 on the Top 40 back in ’87, though it did quite well on the Adult Contemporary chart) is always a seemingly forgotten gem.
I’m sure the album is available on the streaming services for those that go that route.
