So a downstate elected official introduced a bill to ban the use of salt in restaurant kitchens in an effort to get the populous healthier. Do I find this intrusive? Of course I do. While moderating salt intake is a good idea, it is the responsibility of each individual to be sensible, not the government’s.
Now this same official has introduced a bill to require the use of helmets on ski slopes. He has admitted he’s never been skiing. Again, this is another attempt of an elected official to try to legislate personal responsibility. Helmets on skiiers and snowboarders? Yes, if they’re young children or if you want to but it shouldn’t be a law.
I believe this official, who’s name escapes me at the moment and I’m typing this in the car so I can’t look it up, should be relieved of his overzealous approach to governing the people at the earliest opportunity. However, I want this to go a step further.
If the folks in Albany truly cared about it’s citizens, they would introduce legislation that would split the state into two parts for bills of this nature. Elected officials that have never been north of Yonkers have no right to introduce laws that will affect people that live 400 miles away in an area that some in NYC describe as a “snowy Alabama”. This would be like a Buffalo legislator introducing a bill requiring the use of snowmobiles on all city streets in the state when there is more than two inches of snow on the ground. Upstate (north and west of Kingston) is an entirely different world than downstate and I firmly believe that both sides of that cultural divide would be better off if they split into two legislative districts. I don’t know how this would be accomplished but I wish someone would figure it out.
It’s true that restaurants put waaaay too much salt in their food, but wouldn’t a better solution be to encourage people to stay home and cook their own food? It’s better for you, cheaper, fewer calories, less fat, etc., etc., etc.
I think if people are stupid enough to go out to restaurants too often, they deserve to get high blood pressure, hypertension, and heart disease.
That’s a stupid comment to say that people are “stupid enough to go out to restaurants too often” It implies that all people who eat at restaurants have these conditions which is a gross generalization and totally inaccurate.
It also does not make you stupid to have a lifestyle and schedule where you do not have the luxury of a home cooked meal – and it IS a luxury in today’s fast paced world.
Many families are dependent on their members to travel extensively or commute long distances daily. Add that two a ten hour workday, and the other responsibilities of running a business and a family and having the additional hours needed to shop and prepare a heanlthy meal may not always be available for us stupid people.
Apparently you are one of the lucky ones who has so much time available that you can achieve all that you want to achieve everyday, make time to cook healthy meals, and still have time left over to insult people with your blog comments.

Clearly, I’m the victim of an elaborate internet hacking plot to make me look bad. It’s obviously part of a vast right-wing conspiracy pulled off by a highly trained and well-funded anti-American terrorist network such as Al Qaeda or the Teabagger Movement. The proper authorities have been notified.
In the meantime, I hard-wired a high-tech state-of-the-art bullshit blocker firewall on my computer system. It is guaranteed effective at preventing nefarious hackers from taking over my logon credentials and leaving not-so-funny comments in my name all over the blogosphere.
The bullshit blocker’s manual says it has the additional functionality of preventing assholes nicknamed Cubby from sitting down in front of the computer and writing over-the-top comments on my friend’s blog. This function is completely unnecessary I assure you, but it comes with the firewall and can’t be turned off,
